The charming port city of La Rochelle gives you a real taste of France’s coastline, with it’s picturesque harbour, historic towers and delightful old town. Located on the Atlantic coast in the Charente-Maritime region it is a great base for families wanting a mix of history, sea breezes and laid-back French friendliness.
What to Expect
You’ll find plenty in La Rochelle to make a splendid day or ideally a couple of nights out with the family. The harbour front invites easy strolls, ice-cream stops, boat rides and lively cafés. The newer part of the city hosts the excellent aquarium which was a huge hit with our kids.
Parking & Getting Around
One of the first things to sort out when you arrive with the car is parking.
The city offers park-and-ride (P+R) relay car parks on the outskirts, where you can park for free, then hop on a bus into town. Five such relay sites are available. Whilst the parking is free, the bus is not. For central parking, look for underground or municipal car-parks such as Parking Vieux Port Sud / Encan 1 which are open 24/7 and located right in the historic centre. On-street parking is regulated: there are paid zones, and you’ll often pay at a meter or via app/SMS. If your family is arriving late or just staying overnight in a motorhome, then you might consider Les Minimes Marina – plenty of free parking and the boat taxi to town is every 30 mins.”
Arrive early into the historic centre if you want easy parking; else use the P+R and take a bus or bike into town to avoid the stress. The bus network is very accessible and well-suited for families.
La Rochelle has fostered a cycling culture since the 1970s. With its flat terrain, mild climate and 452km of cycle paths, riding a bike here is a true pleasure. The city has lots of bike rental shops, repair services and with the Yelo service you can grab a bike in just a few clicks.
Beaches & Coastal Fun
For families wanting sun, sea and sand, La Rochelle and its surrounds deliver some excellent options:
Plage de la Concurrence – located right in the heart of La Rochelle, a convenient urban beach which is just a short stroll from the old port. It has fine sand, child friendly slop and nearby snack bars.
Plage des Minimes – A larger sandy beach just south of the centre. Good for families, water sports and more of a “beach day” feel.
Plage Chef de Baie – This is a slightly more relaxed beach, with dunes or lawns behind the beach. Good for younger kids, picnics and a slower pace.
Family Beach Tips
Don’t forget to ring a bucket & spade – the sand is great for building sandcastles, especially at Minimes.
Choose mornings or late afternoon for calmer water and fewer crowds.
Shade and picnic spots: Chef de Baie offers lawns or shaded dunes behind the sands.
Water sports – older children or teens might enjoy paddleboarding, sailing etc. at Minimes.
Family-friendly Restaurants
After sightseeing and beach time you’ll want good places to eat. Here are top picks for families — friendly, relaxed and good for kids.
Pizzeria Nonno Leo – Highly rated as a family-friendly option in La Rochelle
Krêp’ Des Tours – Great for pancakes/galettes – always a hit with children.
Bistro Régent Le Gabut – Dog-friendly and family-friendly, with outdoor seating overlooking the harbour.
Dining Tips
Outdoor seating is your friend; kids can move a bit and dogs can generally sit with you.
Try earlier dinners (e.g. 18.30) – there is general less noise, shorter waits and calmer for little ones.
For casual dining, ice cream stops and snack cafés around the harbour are comfortable if the kids need a quick break.
Is it Dog-Friendly?
Overall La Rochelle is dog friendly. You’ll see dogs on the bus, at outdoor cafés, walking in parks.
Although La Rochelle’s beaches are only accessible to dogs out of season (generally October to April), it is best to always check locally. But many of the coast paths and quieter beaches welcome leashed dogs. Some of the boat cruise companies accept pets on board their ships, so you can enjoy a few hours on one of the nearby islands too.
Places to Visit & Things to Do
Extend your stay and you’ll find plenty to explore. The Aquarium de La Rochelle is a must for families. With 12,000+ sea creatures and kid-friendly displays, it’s a real highlight, our little ones especially enjoyed getting up close to the turtles, we suggest you allow half a day for the visit. Enjoy a stroll round the old port, see the three medieval towers guarding the harbour. Head across the bridge to the nearby islands: for example Île de Ré offers cycle paths, beaches and fresh seafood. Visit the lovely Parc Charruyer, a big green space in La Rochelle where kids can enjoy playgrounds and downtime.
La Rochelle hits a sweet spot: seaside fun, historic charm, manageable size (no massive crowds if you avoid peak hours), and a strong infrastructure for families (good beaches, parks, parking). Whether you are cycling along the harbour, enjoying an ice-cream by the port, heading out for a picnic on the sand or letting the kids explore the aquarium — it all fits together nicely. And yes, your dog doesn’t need to be left at home either.
